While 1923 won’t return for a while, we thought it best to make like those hearty frontier folk and stock up — on intel — during the long winter… er, time between seasons.
Gather ’round the campfire! You’ll recall that Season 1 of the drama found Harrison Ford’s Jacob and Helen Mirren’s Cara perilously close to losing the land that had been in their family for decades. Teonna and Pete rescued her from the priests, but were unaware that Father Renaud and some detectives were following their trail. Zane’s wife Alice, who is Asian, was arrested for miscegenation; when Zane stepped in to stop it, the cops beat him. Elizabeth was despondent after she miscarried her and Jack’s child. And Alex and Spencer were separated in Europe after he was nearly arrested for murder.
Not a great epoch in Dutton family history, eh?
Anyway, while we’re waiting for word on when the Yellowstone prequel’s sophomore run will premiere, we’ve put together a handy guide of all things 1923. And we’ll update it whenever new information is available, so much sure to bookmark it and come back often.
WHAT IS THE PLOT OF 1923 SEASON 2?
Paramount+ hasn’t said much about what will happen in Season 2 of the Yellowstone prequel. But it makes sense that we’ll find out what’s happened since Donald Whitfield showed up at Jake and Cara Dutton’s ranch in the Season 1 finale and announced he’d paid the outstanding property taxes on their land — which means, if they don’t/can’t pay him back soon, their impressive spread is his.
Ideally, among the other storylines that ended on a cliffhanger, we’ll also soon get an update on Spencer and Alex’s ongoing, highly beleaguered romance. Last time we saw them, Spencer was being put ashore during their ocean voyage home after he inadvertently played a role in Alex’s former fiancé’s death at sea. As Alex watched her love being taken off the boat, she waved one of Cara’s letters and shouted that she’d meet him in Bozeman, Mont. (Read a full finale recap.)
For what it’s worth, Amina Nieves tells TVLine she hopes that her character, Teonna, gets a break in the new episodes. (She’s been through a lot.) And Brandon Sklenar says that, after the events of the Season 1 finale, Spencer will be “a different man when we find him again in Part 2. Definitely.”
WHICH CAST MEMBERS WILL RETURN FOR 1923 SEASON 2?
Though Paramount+ hasn’t yet released the official Season 2 cast list, it reasons that most of the characters who were still alive and kicking at the end of Season 1 (sorry, John and Emma Dutton!) will be back for the story’s next chapter. So you definitely will see Harrison Ford — who confirmed his participation in February 2024 — and likely will see Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves and Jerome Flynn in the sophomore run.
However, Cole Brings Plenty, who played Pete Plenty Clouds, will not return for Season 2. The actor went missing and was found dead in April 2024 soon after he became a suspect in a domestic-abuse incident. Court documents detailing his cause of death were sealed at the request of his family; law-enforcement officials said there was no evidence of foul play.
WHO IS JOINING THE 1923 CAST FOR SEASON 2?
So far, we know of a few new folks who’ll mingle with the Duttons in Season 2. Dexter alum Jennifer Carpenter (above) will recur as Mamie Fossett, who is described as “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.”
Additionally, Janet Montgomery (New Amsterdam) will recur as Hillary, “a thoughtful woman who does not want to see injustice go unpunished,” according to the official character breakdown.
WHEN WILL 1923 SEASON 2 BE RELEASED?
There’s no word yet on when you’ll be able to watch 1923‘s second season, but the main cast is slated to begin filming later this year. Season 1 premiered on Dec. 18, 2022.
HOW MANY EPISODES WILL 1923 SEASON 2 HAVE?
In December 2022, Sheridan told our sister site Deadline that Season 2 would consist of eight episodes, just like Season 1 had.
“It’s really the second half of the season. This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do,” he said at the time. “I just went on a journey myself, and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. ‘Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice.’ For them, it is great, because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
WILL SEASON 2 BE 1923’s LAST SEASON?
Though Paramount+ hasn’t acknowledged that Season 2 will be 1923‘s swan song, Sheridan’s comments to Deadline (see above) about needing the sophomore run to wrap up the story sure make it seem like the show will end with the Season 2 finale.

WHERE CAN I WATCH 1923 SEASON 1?
All episodes of 1923 Season 1 are available to stream on Paramount+. In addition, Paramount Network will air Season 1 in its entirety starting Sunday, Dec. 8. Single episodes will air Dec. 8 and 15; two episodes will air for the following three Sundays, wrapping with Episodes 7 and 8 on Jan. 5, 2025. (Watch a trailer for the Paramount Network run above.)
